Full Text
The testimony which led to the indictment of Thomas C. Fields amounts to a very serious array of facts, which it will give him some trouble to disprove. It was shown that Fields was largely instrumental in getting a bill through the Legislature, on March 6, 1868, appropriating $50,000 to the members of eight volunteer fire companies of Fields' district, and that Fields entered into a corrupt agreement with the firemen, whereby he was to receive thirty-three per cent of the amount which he should obtain for each under the provision of the act; that he did receive such percentage from them, and that he presented fraudulent claims to the controller, and was paid accordingly.
