Full Text

Washington, December 29.—Secretary Frelinghuysen to-day received a telegram from Minister Morton saying that it had been stated in the chamber of deputies that Dr. Detmers, charged by this government to investigate the trichinosis question, advised in his official report that all hogs in districts where trichinae made its appearance be destroyed. Mr. Morton requests full information on the subject. Secretary Frelinghuysen immediately caused an inquiry to be made by the agricultural department, in whose employ Detmers had been, and this afternoon telegraphed Minister Morton that Detmers stated incorrectly in 1878-79 in his report on the swine plague, trichinosis, that disease being very prevalent in the west, and hogs laboring under it were carelessly sent to market, and that he has since in the newspapers expressed erroneous views on swine disease generally in the west; that Curtis, a thorough expert, who is investigating trichinosis, reports to the agricultural department that there is very little disease of any kind and that Detmers is mistaken; that great care is taken by breeders and packers to send healthy pork to market; that the commissioner of agriculture entirely accepts Curtis' statement, and at a meeting of swine breeders it was unanimously stated that no disease ever occurred among swine in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio, representatives of these states being present at the meeting.
