Colonel W. W. Crosby, superintendent of the Grand Canyon National Park, and R. H. Clarkson, field agent for the Harvey system, were in Flagstaff yesterday.
Col. Crosby is considerably concerned over road conditions from the Old Trails highway into the park and advises that the Maine-Grand Canyon highway, which was rapidly becoming the popular route to Grand Canyon route into the canyon which is increasing so rapidly. He is not an advocate of any special more interest in the travel to that Coconino county should take is in a bad state of repair. While rapidly.
Mr. Clarkson said the big daily touring cars had not been put on schedule as yet because the Maine-Grand Canyon highway had been grievously neglected and that evidently no repair work had been done since last year, making it impossible to use it regularly in its present condition. The Williams-Grand Canyon road and the Flagstaff-Grand Canyon road were both better than the Maine highway, which some one was letting go to decay for some reason or other.
It is evident that the people of Flagstaff and the east end of the county, believing that the Maine-Grand Canyon road was an established fact and being given the same attention as other roads, have gone to sleep.
Either our supervisors should wake up, or our highway commission or Flagstaff in general should arouse and demand some positive, quick action.
Coconino county has only spent about $15,000 all told on this new road. To neglect it now means several times that much money thrown away.
