The first rally held in Custer county was last Tuesday night, Sept. 30, at the Odd Fellows' hall in Challis. This marked the opening of the Democratic State campaign in this county, when Governor Hunt and Hon. James R. Sovereign addressed the citizens upon the important issues of the campaign from a Democratic standpoint.
They were escorted from Salmon to Challis by Hon. James Macnab and Sheriff Hughes of Lemhi county.
The speakers did not arrive till late in the evening, for it is a long and tedious drive to make in a day, and our people had almost given up their coming, but nevertheless they received a warm welcome on their arrival - bonfires were lighted and anvils fired in honor of our distinguished guests.
It was past 8 o'clock when the speaking commenced. M. M. Sweet acted in the capacity of chairman and introduced the speakers. The audience was much larger than expected, owing to the fact that so many people were out of town. Both Governor Hunt and Mr. Sovereign made good and logical arguments, and the last named is an able orator.
