The present situation of the East-India Company is infinitely more prosperous than it has been for a great number of years. The Commutation Act has not only saved them from ruin, but led the way to a degree of wealth the Company never experienced. To sell sixteen millions of pounds of tea in a year, at only a shilling a pound profit, will bring in near a million sterling a year profit; while their revenues in the East, under the regulation of the new act, are constantly applied to wipe off the debts contracted abroad during the war. We see their scrip at six per cent. premium--we see their bonds at three pounds premium--we learn that they have an interest of 36,000 pounds a year paid them by government, which is worth, according to the present price of annuities, 90,000 pounds; and beside that, we see them engrossing all the tea trade of Europe within themselves--every day clears them from some difficulties--pays off some debts--and though they increase their capital, it is merely to carry on an extended trade, and make that capital more valuable. India stock has seen 280 per cent. on a dividend of 12 per cent. when everything was in confusion--and will, in spite of those who wish to depreciate the Company's affairs see a rapid advance in value, as soon as their prosperity is generally understood by the publick.
