Wednesday on Program
Emile Baume, French pianist, who gives his first recital in high school auditorium Wednesday evening under the direction of Cooperative Concert Association was born in Toulon, picturesque Mediterranean port surrounded with the soot and excitement of an important military naval base. His father and grandfather were sailors before him. They were his teachers until he was 14 when he was sent to the National Conservatory of Music in Paris. He studied there under Diemer and was graduated in 1927.
His debut as a concert pianist took place the same year in Paris and for the next five seasons he toured Europe in recitals and in solo appearances with leading orchestras. As a young student he had heard Felix Weingartner conduct in Paris and he took a sabbatical year in 1933 to study with that master at his conservatory in Basle, Switzerland.
In the autumn of 1936 Baume came to the United States. His success in this country was established at his New York debut in Town Hall a month later, and every year since he has made long and triumphant concert tours across the land.
Baume now divides his time between the United States and France. He joins his father on the Riviera every summer and they work on the young Baume's programs. Their relaxation is chess or ping pong and swims in the blue Mediterranean.
Baume is unmarried. In New York he has found a group of his old friends from the Paris Conservatory and they form a brilliant musical coterie. He likes Harlem, swing and American newspaperwomen. He is a great favorite on university concert courses and is not too grave a virtuoso to join in campus activities in which he is often invited to participate.
