The Duke band has been an outstanding attraction at Blue Devil football games this year. New West Point full-dress pattern uniforms and new instruments were purchased for the band this fall, and the band was increased from 70 pieces to 88. This is the first year Duke University has had a complete field band. In addition to the field group, there is the concert band, which will give a series of open air concerts on the Duke campus during the spring.
Fearing also directs the 60-piece Duke symphony orchestra, the string quartet and other instrumental groups. He came to Duke as director of instrumental music in the fall of 1935. He studied at Duke until 1925, when he left for four years of study at the Toledo (Ohio) conservatory. Following two years of teaching at the Toledo conservatory, he was instructor in instrumental music at Louisburg College before coming to Duke. He is a talented concert violinist as well as a conductor.
