Haines Cutoff Open
WASHINGTON, (AP) Senator Magnuson (D.-Wash.) said today the state department has told Canada it feels the Haines Cutoff on the Alaska Highway should not be closed.
Magnuson protested to the department that Canada planned to close the cutoff, the route from Haines, Alaska to the interior of the Territory, on March 25, and asked that the department try to keep it open.
Dean Acheson, acting secretary of state, wrote Magnuson that conferences were being held with various U. S. government departments trying to find a way to meet Canada's objections to keeping the cutoff open.
Delegate Bartlett, who proposed that Canada keep the cutoff open in exchange for the United States maintaining part of a trans-Canada road in northeastern Washington, north of Grand Coulee, said he understood his idea would be presented Canadian officials. This road, connecting two sections of Canada, crosses the northern part of Washington.
