PENSION BILLS PASSED.

$2,000 a Year for Mrs. McCook, Mrs. Fremont, and Mrs. McClellan.

After the tariff debate closed yesterday the Senate proceeded to the consideration of pension bills on the calendar. One of these bills was a bill which, as introduced, proposed to grant to Mrs. Mary Crook a pension of $2,000 a year. The Committee on Pensions had recommended an amendment reducing the amount to $1,200 a year. Senator Gorman appealed to the Senate not to agree to the amendment, but to fix the amount at $2,000, the same as had been reported for the widows of Gens. McClellan and Frémont. Remarks to the same effect and in praise of Gen. Crook were made by Senators Dawes, Mitchell, and Paddock. The amendment was rejected, and the bill passed, allowing Mrs. Crook $2,000 a year, Mr. Cockrell protesting against the practice of giving such a large pension to the widows of major generals. Senate bills were also passed giving the like pension to Mrs. Frémont and Mrs. McClellan.
