Raleigh, Nov. 30.—To support contention that the system is of tremendous economic, as well as humanitarian, value to North Carolina, officials of the Probation commission are pointing to the fact that the slightly more than 3,000 persons under their supervision have earned more than a million and a half dollars in the three years the system has been in operation.
Thus, they declare, the probationers have been real assets to the state in dollars and cents, instead of liabilities because it would cost money to keep them in prison had they been given time to serve instead of being freed under probationary supervision.
Not only that, but families of the probationers would likewise have been completely dependent upon the State or upon charity for support while their bread winners were behind prison bars.
In short, the probation officials figure that the system is now worth, in cold hard cash figures, not less than a million and a half a year.
