IRISH FARMERS TERRORIZED
NOT PAYING RENTS.
A Crowd Visits Their Houses By Night and Practice Unlawful Methods of Intimidation,
Gen. Buller Will Institute a Thorough Search for the Perpetrators.
DUBLIN, Aug. 30.—Two more moonlight outrages are reported from Castle Island in the county this morning. The victims were farmers named respectively Brosnan and Rooney. The moonlighters first visited Brosnan's house and shot him in the leg. They went to Farmer Rooney's, pulled him out of bed, and fired several shots over his head. They also forced him to swear that he would not pay rent. The police heard the shots, but arrived too late to make any arrests.
Gen. Buller will institute a thorough inquiry with the hope of discovering the culprits.
A gunboat has been placed in the Shannon river to enable Gen. Buller to reach the coast quickly.
Gen. Buller left this city to-day for Tralee in the County Kerry, accompanied by his private secretary, Mr. Turner. In an interview just previous to his departure with a Cable News representative, Gen. Buller said "I wish to distinctly state that I have not accepted a dragooning mission or one looking to the assisting of evictions. My task is simply to repress the moonlight raids and ensure the safety of life and property. I propose effecting this by means of flying patrols who are to communicate speedily with regularly organized system of supports. I do not know whether I will be successful in my undertaking, but I mean to do my duty."
