The City Elections.
The Readjuster or Republican ticket which was published in our local columns on Saturday had not been seen by us when we wrote the article of the same day calling upon all the nominees of the Conservative party to stand by the ticket. The mongrel ticket is made up of a few Conservatives and a few Republicans, sandwiched between a number of chronic grumblers, who have for years been trying to damage the Conservative party in some way. We take it for granted that the Conservative nominees will all refuse to allow their names to be used upon the opposition ticket. Several gentlemen who are not nominees have deemed it proper to decline running upon that ticket; and the obligation resting upon the Conservative nominees to stand by his party is stronger than that resting upon the private individual who has not been put forward as a leader.
The movement is one in the hands of the Readjusters, or grumblers, or office-seekers. We hardly know what to call a faction which is not a recognized party, but is engineered by the leaders of the Mahone ring. Some of them desire to turn out faithful officers. Some of them are anxious to get places of any sort for themselves. Some of them are moved by considerations merely personal. But none of them can offer to the voters any good reasons for running the great risks which would be involved in committing the interests of this city to the men who are behind the Readjuster ticket rather than upon it.
