Full Text

A RUNAWAY.—Early this morning, as Mr. Woodruff, of the Eclipse stables, in Gold Hill, was coming down from Virginia City in a fine carryall carriage, he stopped for a few moments in front of Milliken & Co.'s store, south C street, leaving the horses unfastened to a post, while he went into the store, they suddenly started on a full run up C street to the Divide, and no one caring to risk his life in trying to stop them, they kept on over the Divide and came down Main street at a terrific rate. When they arrived near home the front fore-wheel broke into pieces, all the spokes leaving the hub, which as the horses dashed over the rough, frozen ground, kept rolling that side of the carriage. The horses rushed into the stable, dragging the carriage along. Damage: One wheel entirely broken, the two hind wheels more or less damaged, the hind spring entirely broken, swingle-tree and neck yoke broken, the top considerably damaged; and one of the horses considerably cut and corked in the hind legs, etc. The horses seemed terribly frightened, and it was a great wonder that one or both were not killed. Horses had always better be tied when people get out of their vehicles, as it is but a moment's work, and may save a good many dollars by exercising the precaution.
