Full Text
We publish in another column, the letter of Mr. Tyler, declining the canvass for the Presidency, to his friends throughout the Union.—In this letter, Mr. Tyler gives a condensed review of some of the most prominent measures of his Administration, down to the close of the late Session of Congress. He vindicates himself in an able and satisfactory manner of the course which he thought proper to pursue, with regard to the establishment of a U. States Bank, and other political measures which were brought forward by the Whig party. Though President Tyler has not done every thing which we desired, still we owe him a debt of gratitude for what he has accomplished. His defeat of the bill for the establishment of a mammoth United States Bank, would be sufficient of itself, to entitle him to our most grateful recollection. The present happy condition of the country, compared with what it was at some time previous, and the fair rates of exchange between all parts of the country, prove conclusively, that a great government bank is unnecessary. The veto of the President therefore, of this darling and magnificent scheme of the Whigs, was very justly and opportunely exercised.—But Mr. Tyler has other claims upon us, which are not now necessary to mention. We will only mention the Treaty into which he entered, for the annexation of Texas, to our Union, and which was so unwisely and imprudently defeated by the Senate. And this too, by the aid of Southern votes! Mr. Tyler may be considered as belonging to the Democratic party. —On almost all important political questions, he is identified with them. The Southern wing at least, of the Democratic party, will be prepared to yield his Administration a cordial support, when it can do so without any sacrifice of principle. From the Whig, he has no mercy to expect. His appeal to them, is in vain. He might as well preach to stocks and stones. They will continue to thwart him and to denounce him as recreant to their high toned, Federal doctrines. But he has the proud consciousness of knowing, that his course on certain great questions, is satisfactory to the great mass of the Democratic party.
