Full Text

An Epidemic of a singular character has prevailed the present winter in the towns on the southern suburbs of this city. It is mainly pneumonic, often accompanied with pleurisy, and usually with severe derangement of the bowels. Many old people and children have suffered from its attacks, though it yields readily to remedies in cases of persons of robust constitutions. Undoubtedly the peculiar meteorology of the season is responsible for the peculiar form the disease assumes. A year or two ago the Smithsonian Institution at Washington sent blanks to all its observers for the purpose of getting observations on epidemics, fevers, &c., in connection with observations on the weather. It would be interesting to trace the relation that may exist between disease in all its varied forms, and a constantly changing meteorology.
