Full Text

Extract of a Letter from the Hague, February 6.

"The considerable Augmentation of the Army and Navy of the United Provinces has caused many Speculations, and raised various Reports amongst the Politicians of this Place. Many imagine that the States are apprehensive of an Attack from Prussia, and are therefore making these Preparations in their own Defence: and such an Opinion is somewhat sanctioned by the Attention to the Barrier Towns. Others affirm, that a War is expected with some foreign Powers; but the most reasonable Opinion is, that the States were ashamed of the neglected State of their military and naval Forces, and have therefore used this sudden and unremitting Attention to establish them on a more respectable Footing."
