Caused Damages to the Extent of at Least $20,000,000
Americans Render Assistance.
Hong Kong, Sept. 22.—Conservative estimates of the damage from the great typhoon place the losses on all property affected at $20,000,000, that in the city alone being $2,000,000. A hurricane raged for several hours and caused some additional damage although not much.
Relief work is under way, soldiers and civilians clearing away the debris. The offer by the American squadron to render assistance has been accepted and sailors from the gunboat Callao, now in the harbor, are at work ashore.
Great numbers of sampans were destroyed and the government has announced that it will loan money without interest for the replacing of these and other harbor craft. There is great scarcity of lighterage boats.
Mrs. Moore, wife of Bishop Moore, of Victoria, after a search of many hours, with a party of natives, finally gave up looking for the body of her husband, who disappeared with his yacht when it foundered.
Many reports are being received of vessels having foundered in the typhoon. The Albatross, with 150 passengers, went down near Fatshan-men Pass, only six of her passengers and two of her crew being saved.
It is believed that the total dead will not greatly exceed 5,000, among whom were very few whites.
