The Trials of Genius.—Our distinguished townsman, James Pettinger, Esq., who is noted and persecuted for his self-sacrificing efforts to put down the great public evil of strong drink, was recently the victim of an aqueous assault; or, in other words, somebody tipped a bucket of water over him.—Jim arose like the sun in a storm, proceeded to the Justice, made a complaint and had his persecutor arrested. When the trial came off he acted as his own counsel, to the edification of a large audience. His peroration was sublime, and consisted of this short sentence: "I came here for justice, by God, and I'll have it." The prisoner was fined one dollar and costs. It is an unmanly trick to abuse a poor drunkard, and Jim gets more than his share of such usage. When he is not molesting or disturbing any one he should be let alone. To make him the butt of cruel jokes argues a great lack of proper feeling.
