A Man In A Chimney—Narrow Escape from Suffocation.—On Friday night, one of the members of the Hope Engine Company was on the look-out on the top of the engine house, in Sixth street, below Fitzwater, looking for fires. Near the top of the look-out is a tall chimney, which belongs to a two-story house adjoining. After the young man had done looking, he started to go down, but, instead of striking the trap-door he stepped into the chimney, and fell nearly to the second story, when he was stopped by the narrowness of the flue. He immediately commenced to cry murder, fire, &c., which aroused a German woman sleeping in the house. She got up and ran into the yard, thinking the noise was outside of the house. She then aroused her husband, but he also failed to ascertain from whence the sound proceeded.— The cry of distress was still heard, and, after a number of persons had been attracted to the spot, one of the members of the Hope Engine went up on the roof and discovered the whereabouts of his comrade. The man in the chimney, in a choking voice, called for water, and while an attempt was made to satisfy his thirst, the bucket containing the water was overturned in the chimney, nearly drowning the imprisoned fireman. On making an examination, it was found that the unfortunate man was wedged so tight in the flue, that the mantel-piece had to be knocked away and a hole made in the wall before he could be extricated.
