The progress of Garibaldi, in Southern Italy, is so rapid and alarming to the despots of Europe, that Austria has about given notice that she will intervene in behalf of the King of Naples. If so, a war is inevitable between her and Sardinia. The latter has now grown so strong, by annexation and Italian unity, that it is probable that she may be a match for Austria, without the assistance of France. In any event, we do not think that Garibaldi can be stopped— because the people are now thoroughly with him, and he has at least the moral support of France. Austria had already demanded explanations from Piedmont concerning Garibaldi's letter to Victor Emmanuel, announcing a projected attack on Venice. There was great activity manifested in the Austrian Marine Department.— A complete understanding between Austria and Prussia is officially announced.
That the government of Victor Emmanuel is popular may be concluded from the fact that a Sardinian loan closed with subscriptions to the amount of three times the sum needed
