A springtime trip to the States is now definitely scheduled for the infantry battalions of the Alaska National Guard.
The annual two weeks of field training for the infantry units is planned for Fort Lewis near Tacoma, Wash., from April 1 thru April 15, 1956. In the past few years most Alaska Guard field encampments have been held in the vicinity of Anchorage.
This will be the first time that an annual field training for the Guard will be held outside the territory. It promises to afford an opportunity for many young Alaskans to get their first view of the States while taking their two weeks of field training which supplements their 48 armory drills of the National Guard training year.
The movement to Fort Lewis from points in central and southeast Alaska will be by air from collecting points extending from Ketchikan to Fairbanks.
The giant air movement of the guardsmen from what is considered an "overseas" theater will be unique in National Guard history.
The operation will involve about 600 officers and men and some equipment of Headquarters, Alaska National Guard and the 207th and 208th Infantry Battalions.
