Curious district called the Thousand Wells on the western slope of Echo cliff, remarkable for reverberation of sound. Country rock is impervious sandstone striated with deep grooves from winter rains. Friable sand rock forms large basins as reservoirs filled in rain-time, supplying cattle and people through dry season. Great highway passes through midst. No other water sources; without these wells, no life could exist. Eastern slope contrasts with innumerable perennial springs, rich verdure, evergreen trees, cultivated fields, and wigwams alive with people.
