THE MODOCS CAPTURE A WAGON TRAIN.
Captain Jack Evacuates the Lava Beds Field of the 26th Ult.
General Davis and Staff at the Front.
The Troops Ordered to Move With Five Days' Rations.
WASHINGTON, May 10.—A dispatch from the lava beds of the 7th says: The Modocs captured a quartermaster's train of three wagons, eleven mules and three horses. Three soldiers were wounded. On the 5th several large fires could be seen in Jack's camp, which evidently was a celebration of their victory. Davis and staff left for the front under an escort commanded by Lieut. Miller and a detachment of the First Cavalry.
Later.—Two squads sent out to reconnoitre report that Capt. Jack left the position from which he made the fight on the 26th. The cavalry and Warm Spring Indians are ordered to scour the lava beds to find the Modocs. The troops are ordered to move with five days' rations. The indications are that the Modocs have evacuated the lava beds.

ST. LOUIS, May 10.—Ten companies, numbering about 500 men, under command of Col. Flint, passed through this city en route for the lava beds.
LAVA BEDS, May 10.—The remains of Lieut. Cranston and other missing soldiers were found among the rocks. Lieut. Harris is sinking. All available horses will now be employed in hunting the Modocs in the country. A guerrilla war will be commenced. As the Modocs are well mounted it may continue all summer.
