Clyde King and Harold Croxton, partners in one of the main events of the day at Fred Henton's Kenai Lodge Roundup won the 880-yard canoe race Sunday.
Earl Cass, maker of Kenai canoes and his partner, Robt. Morgan, came in second while Vern Hall and his partner came in a close 3rd. It was almost a photo-finish.
The Kenai Outlaw was ridden with a saddle: Milt Odom's cook in the saddle.
About 125 persons were present and everyone enjoyed the fine chuck wagon food of barbecued beef.
So far as we have been able to learn, Gus Manthey leads in the Fish Derby.
The Dance at Kenai Lodges was well attended, there being 40 couples present.
Clyde King tells of a ducking he received a couple of hours before the race. One man in a canoe gives the bow too much play so when the wind hits it you have almost no control. The 12-mile current and the wind drove him down stream for nearly half a mile where he managed to push the bow into the bank and over he went. Yes - the water was cold.
A stranger arrived at the roundup and told of his trip to Homer and back. He said the fire was completely out of control and the only hope was heavy rains.
