Washington, Jan. 14, 1850.
The statement respecting the forgeries of officers' accounts against the Government, for raising and furnishing men for the Mexican war, has created much sensation and speculation in all circles here. Mr. B. F. Brown of Ohio, who was the Agent of four of the forged or spurious accounts, and who is the Locofoco caucus nominee for Doorkeeper of the House of Representatives of the present Congress, it is understood, has suddenly left the city—some say, to get rid of the consequences which are to follow the exposure of the forgeries, while others say to hunt up and bring to judgment Capt. Naglee, who it is alleged has victimized him.
It is a very ugly business all around. Capt. Naglee has been gone from the city some days. It appears that he had purchased a number of officers' claims, among others, Captain Herron's, of Pittsburg, which amounted to less than 150 dollars, for which he paid 90 dollars—Previously to the selling of this claim to Captain Naglee Captain Herron had entrusted it, with the proper vouchers, to Mr. B. F. Brown for collection. Mr. Brown, it is supposed, knew the amount of the claim. He received notice from Capt. Herron that the claim had been transferred to Capt. Naglee, and Mr. Brown was requested to look to that gentleman for his compensation in the matter. It appears that the claim as audited and allowed, amounted to upwards of 800 dollars! The proceeds were paid over to Mr. Brown, and by him to Capt. Naglee.—Other forged accounts, it appears, were allowed and paid over in the same way. It is still hoped by many who had taken a liking to Mr. Brown, that he will be able to show that he has committed no act, except that of folly, in the matter. I understand that the Second Auditor has directed proceedings to be instituted against both Captain Naglee and Mr. Brown.
