"CATHOLIC 'BUT NO ROMAN.'"

The latest contention of Church of England advocates is: "The Church of England was for some time in full communion with, but never was a part of, the Roman Church."

This stand is very easily upset.

1. Professor Maitland (Professor of the Laws of England at the University of Cambridge) says: "But, whereas the English State was an independent whole, the English Church was, in the eyes of its own judges, a dependent fragment, whose laws had been imposed upon it from without." (English Historical Review, July, 1896, p. 475.)

The same learned writer says: "The whole of Western Europe, England included, was subject to the jurisdiction of one tribunal of last resort—the Roman Curia." (Hist. of English Laws, I., p. 93-4.)

2. Dr. James Gairdner says: "There were in the Middle Ages, in every kingdom of Europe that owned the Pope's jurisdiction (England did so), two authorities—the one temporal, the other spiritual—and the head of the spiritual jurisdiction was at Rome." (The Guardian, March 1, 1899.)

3. The Anglican Bishop of St. Asaph (1847), Dr. T. Vowler Short, says, in "A Sketch of the History of the Church of England:" "The existence of the Church of England as a distinct body, and her final separation from Rome may be dated from the time of the Divorce." The heading of the chapter (V.), which begins with these words, is:

"The commencement of the Church of England: The authority of it vested in the Crown."

On page 593 of the Bishop's "History of the Church of England" are to be found the words: "The Church of England first ceased to be a member of the Church of Rome during the reign of Henry VIII."
