A NEW SONG.

Ye heroes who him see,
Once more the bright goddess of freedom proclaims,
Your word must not rest if you value your claims;
For France by false liberty having grown craz'd,
In building air-castles her people's amaz'd:―
By fraud they have conquer'd, by perfidy won,
What by courage and arms they ne'er could have done?
Their art and intrigue quite successful have grown;
French Greedym on wings of an eagle has flown:
They proffer their friendship, protection and arms,
Enticements they practice like rattlesnake's charms;
When consummate their plans, they're ne'er at a stand,
But force contributions or douceurs in hand.
With skill diplomatic, they strive to elude
Our Envoys of Peace, and our Congress delude;
But wisdom will sanction the laws of our land,
Whilst Adams at head of our Congress shall stand;
His zeal patriotic to screen us from harm,
Will the heart of each grateful American warm:
With pious devotion to Power Divine,
We'll trust for annoyance of their base design;
The God of our Fathers a blessing bestows,
In great Washington the dismay of our foes;
Our people unite in, and him at the head
Of our armies, proud France we ne'er need to dread;
For conquest we arm not, our motives shall be,
To let the world know that America's free.
