Full Text

The following extraordinary circumstance happened on Monday evening last: Two soldiers of the first regiment of foot guards enlisted a recruit in Westminster; they took him to the orderly room at the Horse Guards, and had him measured, but the approving officer not being present, he could not then be allowed: however, they took him to the hospital to have him examined by the surgeon; this the recruit absolutely refused to comply with, nor could persuasion or threats avail; at length the soldiers enticed him into a stable, and suspecting something extraordinary to be the matter, they by force proceeded to an examination, and to their no small mortification and surprise, found they had enlisted a woman. They took her before a Justice, and had her committed as an impostor.
