The passing of Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt has brought many kind memories to people all over the world, including Nome.
Friday evening Mrs. Stanley Morgan told of her meeting with this great woman many years ago at the White House.
She told how she and her husband, then Sgt. Stan Morgan, who had been stationed at Pt. Barrow with the ACS for many years were on a year long furlough, due to the length of time they had been in the Arctic without a vacation.
They traveled across the United States stopping to visit in many places of interest.
When they arrived in Washington, D.C., Mrs. Morgan relates how a messenger brought an invitation to her at the hotel with a White House crest on it and it contained an invitation to tea with the wife of the President.
She was thrilled with the honor conferred and made the necessary plans. Upon reaching the White House and being ushered into a large room, she was dismayed to find herself alone and was horrified with the thought that she had probably arrived on the wrong day by mistake.
She was about to leave when Mrs. Roosevelt entered the room and assured her that it was not a mistake and that she had invited her for tea so that they could have an interesting talk all by themselves as she wanted to hear about Alaska from a real Alaskan woman.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt was on one of his trips to Warm Springs, Ga., at the time on a visit.
