The ministers affirm that religion is the eternal spiritual source of inspiration and power for establishing 'real democratic morality' in every sphere of private and public life and they insist that the aim of religion is the advancement of justice, amity, and understanding among men.
In accordance with these principles, to which they firmly adhere, the members of the Ministerial Association have resolved to give their 'wholehearted support to the objectives of the Report of the President's Committee on Civil Rights . . . to pledge cooperation with other responsible American organizations in order to uphold the great historical, religious and moral political traditions of our people; to create a permanent committee on civil rights within the Sunbury Ministerial Association."
Looking for ways to apply its program to community needs, the Ministerial Association is now seeking the cooperation of the local Board of Education, the YMCA, the Community Center, radio and the press, various service and social clubs, veteran and union organizations.
Citizens of Sunbury are interested and proud of the leadership their clergy is giving them. Braving the heat of last 4th of July, which was a Sunday, many of them assembled on the court-house lawn to take part in a Union Service dedicating Independence Day to God and 'the truth deeply embedded in the program for civil rights.'
They heard their fellow citizen, Rev. Dr. George W. Hallman, say that the best place for preserving the Declaration of Independence is not in vaults of stone but 'in the hearts, in the minds and the spirits of men.' Quoting the Declaration of Independence he declared, 'All men are created equal.'
What difference can it make that man's skin varies in color? Neither man's skin nor his origin, neither his race nor his creed can have any effect on this most fundamental principle of the equality of all men, white, red, black or yellow?
The principles and program of Sunbury's Ministerial Association are recommended to other communities as a demonstration of the power of religion for freedom and justice in the everyday life of men.
