Creswell Officer Ambushed Friday

Creswell, Oct. 24.—(AP)—Seaton Davenport, chief of police, injured Friday morning by an unknown assailant, was taken to Duke hospital at Durham yesterday afternoon. His condition was said to be serious.

Investigators sought today to trace an assailant who blackjacked Davenport and left him unconscious on a highway near here.

Davenport, picked up early yesterday, was thought to have been injured by a hit and run driver. Later, however, he regained consciousness for a while and said he was struck by an assailant who came upon him from behind.
