Full Text

Stephen Chase, esq. a respectable citizen of Northfield, who has heretofore been a supporter of the administration, and for several years represented that town in the legislature, has now determined to give his vote at the ensuing election for the peace ticket. This circumstance giving umbrage to some of the war-hawks of that vicinity, they came to his house and began abusing him with the usual slang of federalist, old tory, &c. He requested them to leave the house, and was actually obliged to turn one of the company out by force, who persisted in his abuse. Immediately part of the company returned, burst open the doors, hauled Mr. Chase out of doors, kicked, beat and abused him in the most shameful manner, at the same time exclaimed, kill the damn'd tory! beat him, kill him!! What is a man's liberty worth if we are coming to this? We trust that such conduct will not be countenanced by the more candid part of the democrats in Northfield.
