Eating one's own Words!

A few weeks ago, the Democratic Editors fell tooth and nail upon Mr. Gallatin for shaking an EMPTY NATIONAL PURSE at Congress. They called him the wily Genevan, a mischief making foreigner, an intriguer, an apostate, and various other appellations peculiar to that class of scribblers. Lately, however, (in consequence it is believed of orders from head-quarters) they have begun to accuse themselves of uttering falsehoods against this gentleman and, as might be expected, are literally eating their own words!—Freeman's Journal.

A writer in the Virginia democratic Argus asserts that Mr. GALLATIN, since he has been Secretary of the Treasury has amassed a fortune of Two Hundred Thousand dollars. He is also charged with having lately transmitted the interest of the Dutch loan in specie, thereby furnishing one of the Bonapartes with hard money; and that this was contrary to the inclinations of the President. The author of the charges is unknown; and that he writes under the direction of a man high in office in Washington.
