Full Text

By a Gentleman lately from Fayal we learn, that the inhabitants of that and the other western islands or Azores, and of Madeira, were under great apprehensions of a famine the ensuing winter, as their crops of grain had fallen very short last Season—that about the 8th of August last a meeting of the inhabitants of Fayal had been called, for the purpose of adopting measures to procure provisions from Portugal or the American States, but, through party-spirit, no determination was formed—that in the whole Island a barrel of flour or bushel of wheat or corn, was not to be purchased—that the greater part of the inhabitants were reduced to the necessity of subsisting on garden-roots, fruit and fish—and that it would require many cargoes of flour and corn to afford the inhabitants of all the Islands even a temporary relief, those of Fayal alone being in immediate want of 60,000 bushels, for present consumption.
