VOLCANO ACTIVE IN ALASKA, SHIP REPORTS STATE
Shishaldin Again Giving Off Heavy Smoke and Flames, Is Claim.

KINGS COVE, Alaska, June 25.- Shishaldin volcano, on Unimak Island, which erupted violently November 20, 1922. was emitting bursts of heavy smoke early in May. officers of the coast guard cutter Haida reported on arrival of the vessel here in the course of her annual patrol of Alaskan and Bering Sea waters.

The 1922 eruption of Shishaldin was picturesque, according to the stories of eyewitnesses. Great flames burst from the crater and the top of the volcano was blown high in the air. about 200 feet of the summit disappearing.

Lava poured down the canyons, melting the snow, and the black streams could be seen for miles. Lava continued to flow for three days. and heavy smoke was emitted for more than a week. At one of the light houses on Unimak Pass, the flames lighted up the sky for days. appearing, according to the keepers. in the form of a cross.

On Christmas Eve, 1922, Pavlof Volcano, on the Alaskan Peninsula. was in eruption and lava flowed for several days thereafter, with a heavy emission of smoke for a longer period.

Natives at villages visited by the Haida declared that Bogoslof, the "disappearing island" that first appeared from the sea during a period of heavy earthquakes and volcanic activity in 1906. had changed its contour during the last year. but the report could not be confirmed. Scientists declare that Bogoslof is in reality a submerged volcano. only the peak appearing above the surface of the ocean.
