Lynn, Mass.—A fellow who styles himself Madison Mason of Massachusetts town of Waynesborough, Georgia, on a scurvy letter, bearing the postmark of Lynn, has saddled us with 25 cents postage on a friend of this genius, of all of which we are as ignorant as of the name or fame of this same Madison Mason. If this Mr. Madison Mason be a real in esse, we would hereby thank him to remit, forthwith, the 25 cents he has filched from us, postage paid: after which we will take time to consider his very gracious proposition, and should he turn out to be worthy of our notice, "according to the rules that govern the conduct of men of honor," we will, in pursuance of his liberal offer, choose for the place of meeting the deck of the vessel that is to descend the Niagara Falls, the 5th of September, giving him the privilege, which we will not claim on our part, of selecting for his second any of his fellow bears on board—the weapon to be either a corn stalk or a hogging awl, with both of which the service of Mr. Madison Mason in the Georgia militia, where he doubtless acquired his martial ardor, or his previous occupation in the renowned town of Lynn, must have made him familiar. But pay us our 25 cents first! Mr. Madison Mason informs us, (doubtless with the intention of having so important a movement in high life publicly noticed,) that he is on his way to Saratoga Springs, with the view of accomplishing himself in target firing. If he can succeed in hitting the side of a barn, it will answer our purpose, though we opine it would be much more to his credit to save his powder, and remit from the proceeds the quarter of a dollar we are the poorer for on his account! We earnestly recommend to him, while in practice at the Springs, low diet, "plentiful diluent of the pure element without a single blush in it, and frequent applications of Dr. Cannon's medical electricity; and if this does not cool his courage in a fortnight, until a healthful change is effected in the constitution, we will give up all hopes of a doctorate from any Backwoods College in the country.
