Full Text

The Lynchburg Virginian, in the course of some spirited remarks addressed to the Freeholders of Virginia, has the following:

"The friends of the administration have every motive to animate them to vigorous and unsted efforts. True, they are taunted, beforehand, by their opponents, with being a weak and inefficient minority, whose feeble voice already affords "food for mirth and laughter;" and whose numerical inferiority, when it comes to be exhibited at the polls, will cover them with shame and confusion.

We know that this prophecy may be falsified by vigorous exertions: We do not know, that, by using them, we may not gain the State. At all events, there will be much cause for gratification in closely contesting a point which the swaggering boasters of the opposition have represented to be infinitely beyond our grasp.

We may thus check their swelling pride, and force back the half expressed sneer, if we can do nothing else. Indeed, we may reverse the taunt, and with triumphant feelings, bid them compare their prophecy with the result. The districts represented in Congress by Messrs. Leffler, Maxwell, Armstrong, Mercer, and Newton, will give large majorities for the administration. In those represented by Messrs McCoy and Taliaferro, small majorities are anticipated. in some others, our ticket will run closely on the heels of its opponent, and in the remainder it will receive a handsome support.

Let us, then, be on the alert, and show our opponents that there is yet a powerful minority in Virginia, unseduced by the waving of a plume, the glittering of a sword, or the buzzas of a single victory."
