STEPHEN L. THEOBALD.

The life of Stephen L. Theobald was one of abundant fruitfulness. It is perhaps impossible to perfectly measure his great service to Christianity, the Catholic denomination, to the community or to the particular race of which he was a member. We can though pay tribute to his life of service and devotion to the highest ideals of life.

Father Theobald was a pioneer in the priesthood of his church. He was the distinction of being one of the few Negro Catholic priests of the 20th century. A scholar, a student and a firm Christian character he profoundly affected the life of thousands of all races who came to him for spiritual guidance and comfort. His outstanding character and interest in his own race helped immeasurably to keep the race relations in St. Paul on the high plane of mutual regard and co-operation that exists. His death is both a shock and a heavy loss to the community.

In paying tribute we must remember that after all is said and done the real tribute to the man is that it can be truthfully said that the world he leaves behind him is better for his having walked it.
