COULDN'T BEAT THE UNION

The Chrysler Corp. tried for 54 days to smash the UAW-CIO. but had to admit in the end that the job was too tough.

The combined strength of the corporation and all its notorious allies could not break the determination of auto workers. They remembered what the plants were like before the union took a hand.

A handsome contract is the fruit of the workers' victory, in some respects the best in the industry. The flaws can be mended later

Where will the Wall Street union busters try to attack next?

Where will they mobilize their radio rabble-rousers, their discredited preachers, their hasbeen union politicians, their prostitute press, their assorted goons fooling with racial dynamite, and their Elliott Roosevelt, a labor hater who adds no glory to his father in the White House?

We may be quite sure the next union-busting drive will not be launched in the auto industry. The UAW-CIO met the aggressors squarely and halted them in their tracks.

It's too bad Chrysler had to take 54 days before it agreed to recognize democracy in the industry. Those 54 days meant grief and loss to the auto workers, to the dealers, to the community and to the corporation itself.

But if the lesson has been well learned the cost has been worth while. Let us hope no further lessons will be needed.
