Full Text

Salonica, [the Thessalonica of Bible history] June 27. We are in a state of extreme alarm. An insurrection of the Greeks of Cassandria has broken out, and the Turks, after a bloody and fierce conflict, have been driven into this city. It was nearly full of troops before, and under the irritation of defeat, and having a powerful influence over the Turkish population, the most frightful excesses are feared. Our situation is now aggravated by the appearance of a Greek squadron in our harbor, who are making preparations to attack the place. Other accounts say, Salonica surrendered, after a three weeks blockade, on capitulation.

Greek fleet. The Greeks have nearly two hundred armed cruisers, mostly merchantmen, and fully manned. To meet this force uncommon exertions are making at all the Turkish naval arsenals to equip ships of war: and the command of the fleet has been given to Kara Ali, late port commander of Constantinople.

The French have seventeen sail of armed vessels in the Archipelago.
