A REMARKABLE VICTORY.
Many of the newspapers of the state have congratulated Wm. D. Upshaw on his election to congress. The Tifton Gazette, in felicitating both Mr. Upshaw and the Fifth district, says:
Wm. D. Upshaw will make a valuable addition to Georgia's representation in congress. He is loyal; he is able, and his sincerity and devotion to an ideal won him many years ago the sobriquet, "Earnest Willie." When training ripens natural ability he will make Georgia once more recognized in the lower house. The people of the Fifth have done the state a favor by electing him; he will stand for something besides spoils in the national legislature.
Mr. Upshaw's election to congress was the most remarkable of all recent campaigns. After conquering a spinal injury that would have made most men invalids he has devoted his life to working for uplift and education. Now he is to have the honor of representing in congress the largest and wealthiest district in the southern states. He won his fight decisively, carrying all but one small county in his district.
In view of the race he made for congress he might now be the nominee for the United States senate had he not withdrawn from the contest.
