Full Text

THE BIG SHIP.-Certain delegates of the Harrisburg Convention, on hearing that the Pennsylvania was about to be removed from Philadelphia to Norfolk, for the purpose of being coppered and fitted out for sea, have addressed a humble petition to that high and mighty potentate, his excellency Martin Van Buren, President of the United States of America, praying that such an intention may be abandoned, and that the big ship may be fitted out in Philadelphia, where the best materials and best workmen may be procured at the cheapest rates. The delegates, doubtless, await the Imperial Ukase on the subject with breathless suspense: but they will probably receive a negative answer from his Feline Majesty, as that administration, whose principle he is bound to carry out, always shewed a most sovereign disrespect for any thing that was cheap. "Expense is no object," as the loafer said to the tailor who was making up the cloth he had stolen. So excellent a chance of getting rid of a little of that surplus revenue, whose return into the pockets, of the people should be seriously deprecated, will not be suffered to escape the vigilant almoners of "his Excellency's" executive bounty.
