JACKSON, Jan 13.--The supply of beer to four retail outlets in Alcorn and Holmes counties, against which complaints had been filed, has been cut off. State Director W. W. Pierce of the Brewers and Mississippi Beer Distributors Committee announced today.
Three of the outlets affected by the shut-off ordered are located in Corinth and the other on U. S. Highway 51, five miles south of Durant.
State Director Pierce said all four outlets had been the source of numerous complaints and that law enforcement authorities in both counties recommended the shut-off action. None of the four were properly qualified under the Mississippi law to sell beer at retail, Director Pierce said.
Named in the shut-off order, which went to all wholesale beer distributors in the state, were Eli Burrows, operating Burrows Cafe; Clyde Timlake, operating Timlake's Cafe, and G. R. Dixon, operating Dick's Cafe, all in Corinth, and Mrs. Mandy McLain McDaniels Polk, operating an establishment known as "Eagle's Nest" or "Mandy's Place", near Durant.
The Committee's action at Corinth won the praise of the city governing authorities. Shortly after the shut-off orders were issued Mayor Frank K. Hughes and the Board of Aldermen voted approval of the action at a regular meeting of the Board.
Director Pierce stated that the shut-offs in Alcorn and Holmes counties brought the number of such actions since the Committee was organized two and one-half years ago to 33. In addition, he reported, 16 outlets have lost their state permits by revocations, 419 warnings have been issued, 10 places closed by injunction, 231 outlets corrected undesirable conditions after warnings, 1 was placed on probation and two elected to voluntarily surrender their permits.
"Credit for the splendid improvement in conditions surrounding the retail sale of beer in Mississippi," Director Pierce said, "is due to the fine work of state and local law enforcement authorities. The Committee has given them every assistance within its means."
"Continuation of the cooperation between the authorities and the Committee, and of the industry's Self-Regulation program in Mississippi, insures against disruption of the constantly expanding efforts to maintain wholesome conditions surrounding the sale of beer in this state," he said.
