It was said authoritatively that on his way to Manila Brooke-Popham and his associates visited the Netherlands East Indies for conference with defense leaders there.
Conferences here were expected to take in the entire problem of defense from the Netherlands East Indies, through Manila, to waters farther north.
Brooke-Popham and the other officers, including Maj. Gen. Richard H. Dewing, his chief of staff, landed at Cavite, the U. S. naval base near here on Manila Bay, in a four-motored British seaplane from Singapore.
They are to continue on to Hong Kong, tomorrow or Friday to survey the situation there.
The Hong Kong visit will conclude a series of inspection trips by Brooke-Popham to British empire defenses throughout the Far East.
