East Rule, Feb. 13, 1878.

Editor of Sentinel: It is so long since I saw any communication from this point, in your paper, that I thought I would write you a few lines, and give you some idea of what the people around here are doing.

First of all, we have about 17 feet of mud more or less, which makes the lumber trade (our chief dependence) very dull. Reese is still sawing lumber, and I am still holding to about 300,000 feet for want of customers.

About a week since the pupils from the Island School gave us an exhibition, and although (owing to the weather) the attendance was small, they acquitted themselves in a very creditable manner.

Prof. Scott is conducting a large class through the mysteries of penmanship, this being the second that he has taught here. I visited his school the other evening, and was much pleased with what I saw. Instead of the laughing and talking that we see in so many schools, every one was perfectly still and thoroughly attentive to business. Prof. Scott is a first-rate penman—and a splendid scholar generally. His pupils speak in high terms of praise of the care, attention and uniform courtesy that he extends to them. As a natural consequence his scholars are improving very rapidly. Now I am played out.

Yours.
