Full Text

In speaking of this place, a correspondent of the Richmond Dispatch, under date of October 2nd, says:

"Staunton presents an air of business and go-aheadativeness, which, in contrasting the size, ought to put big Richmond to the blush. Nearly everybody appears to be up to something, and up to snuff also. What the Stauntonians don't know isn't worth knowing. During my stay I did not see a man whittling sticks! as in some other towns I visited—Charlottesville for instance."

We commiserate such sleepy villages as Charlottesville and Lexington. Can they not be aroused from their apathy and supineness? Cannot their wide-awake journals drive sleep from the eyes and slumber from the eye-lids of those somnolent little towns?
