Alexandria Daily Gazette.

MONDAY, JULY 3.

The federalists and the democrats were
so wide apart, that those who pretended to
be moderate, insisted that there was no
way to restore political tranquillity but by
compromise. But how could a compromise
be effected? The measures of the present
executive thus far seem to point out a method
which appears very practicable; rulers
chosen by democrats; measures taken from
the old federal school. Let the democrats
support the policy for sake of the men;
and we will support the men for sake of the
policy. Thus will harmony be ensured,
and what is of infinitely more importance,
our country will be saved.
