TO THE INSANE ASYLUM.

The End of a Short Career of Vice and Dissipation.

Lora Robinson is now an inmate of the territorial insane asylum, a wreck of humanity, with clouded mind and weakened body, with uplifted and fluttering hands weakly striving to ward off a vague and threatening shape of horror that to her seems present ever by day and by night. At times when her mania is most acute her hysteria is violent and, if kindly hands were not there to prevent, her life would be forfeit to her own act.

Eight years ago in Phoenix there was no brighter, no handsomer girl than she. Passing through the local schools, at 18 she passed to the normal school at Tempe, where her attractive personality soon won for her among her schoolmates the pet name of "Mrs. Langtry." Her conduct was irreproachable and her bearing modest.

Returning to Phoenix, the death of a stepfather sent her adrift on the world. An elder sister was in San Bernardino, an inmate of a house of ill-fame. Thither the girl drifted, though the story of her endeavors in Los Angeles to withstand temptation was a pitiful one. It was through the one she had learned to love that she at last fell. The man who brought her to a life of shame remained near her a few years, then tired of her and deserted her for another. It was then the first signs of insanity appeared.

Her lover's loss was followed by violent hysteria, and for months the young woman was kindly attended by her sisters of low degree.

Almost a year ago, Lora, who now calls herself "Ivy Stanley," removed with her sister to Prescott, there to become a denizen of Granite street.

Her infirmity increased and she now, a victim of grief and of dissipation, is an inmate of the asylum.
