French papers report offers of 2,000-3,000 equipped horses for Napoleon's cavalry. They and Bonaparte's speech confirm heavy French losses in Russia, debunking rumors of a retreat to Poland with only 20,000 casualties and plans for a 300,000-man re-invasion.

Full Text

The French papers mention the offer to the Emperor of Horses equipped for Cavalry, by individuals, public bodies & districts, to the number of 2 or 3000. Neither the French papers received by the Leo, nor Bonaparte in his speech contradict any of the accounts, heretofore received, of the immense losses and defeats the French experienced in Russia. We state this fact merely to show the absurdity of a report in circulation, such as that he made good his retreat to Poland with the loss of 20,000 men only, and that he is about re-entering Russia with an army of 300,000 men.

Event Details

French papers mention offers of 2 or 3000 equipped horses for cavalry to the Emperor by individuals, public bodies, and districts. French papers received by the Leo and Bonaparte's speech do not contradict accounts of immense French losses and defeats in Russia. This highlights the absurdity of circulating reports of a successful retreat to Poland with minimal losses and plans for a large army re-entering Russia.
