FOR THE ENQUIRER ORIGINAL POETRY.
Inscribed to Miss Barbour.
" On beauty's tongue dwell accents pleasing to the Brave and Bold."
When Britain's Genius, grasping at each pole,
Claim'd ev'ry billow that dar'd foam'd to roll;
Lighting war's torch at some Volcano dire,
She breath'd o'er Ocean, thunder, smoke and fires-
Our hardy Tars enjoyed the glorious view
And ask'd the States for leave to thunder too,
For leave to grasp the forked! bolts of war,
And light the waves with many a glorious star !
Our Eagle too, the favourite bird of fame,
Spreads his strong pinions tipt with living flame,
And mid his starry Zone was seen afar,
Pointing his arrows for a glorious war.
Deck'd in the trophies of the vanquish'd main,
The prostrate flags of Denmark, France and Spain
War's stormy brood, vain Europe's idle boast
Shrink from the Genius of the western coast.
No Marlboroughs now, their piercing legions form,
Keen and terrific as awful storm,
No Wolfes resistless celestial fire,
Midst shouts of deathless Victories expire!
And Wellington, true glory's darling child,
Won't risk his laurels mid our forests wild.
Virginia views with conscious pride elate.
Her towering Capitol stand " fix'd as fate!"
Its sacred walls are sentinel'd by Fame,
And Patriot Heroes, "need I, Williams ! name."
From mountain heights where many a wild stream pours,
Rush forth to battle Father's united sons:
They march, halt, form, each like a Veteran stands,
Ready's the word, for Porter rightly commands.
See Cocke advances, view his modest guise
Glory will follow where his Eagle flies!
By nature destined in the field to shine,
His glance can animate the embattl'd line.
Such be our Leaders, heaven presiding Powers,
Till peace with all, her heav'nly charms be ours.
OSCAR.
